Opening of the First Session of the Twenty-Eighth Legislature

Released on May 17, 2016

Public Invited to May 17 Outdoor Ceremony

Lieutenant Governor Vaughn Solomon Schofield will formally open the First Session of the Twenty-Eighth Legislature with the Speech from the Throne today in the Assembly Chamber of the Saskatchewan Legislative Building.

“The ceremonial aspects of the opening of the Legislature are meaningful and signify the value we place on our democracy,” Solomon Schofield said.  “The demands of public office are enormous, and I am grateful to all who will serve in Saskatchewan’s Twenty-Eighth Legislature.”

The public is invited to attend the outdoor portion of the ceremony, which begins at 1:25 p.m. in front of the Legislative Building at 2405 Legislative Drive.  The ceremony includes: the arrival of the Lieutenant Governor; where she will be greeted by Premier Brad Wall and Provincial Secretary Nadine Wilson; a Royal Salute; the inspection of a Canadian Forces Guard of Honour; a 15-Gun Salute given by the 10th Field Artillery, 38 Canadian Brigade Group; and a fly-past by aircraft from 15 Wing Moose Jaw.

The first formal opening of the Legislative Assembly took place on March 29, 1906.  Representatives of the Legislature, the Executive and the Judiciary first gathered to hear Lieutenant Governor Amédee Forget acknowledge expressions of welcome into the Canadian federation from Ottawa and the other provincial legislatures.  This democratic tradition has taken place at the onset of each legislative session since.
