This year marks 40 years since the Regina Transition House began its mission to provide women and children escaping abusive relationships with safe shelter and aid. Since then, the Transition House has provided emergency housing and support services to more than 14,000 women and children.To honour the Transition House for its service to Regina and Saskatchewan, Lieutenant Governor Vaughn Solomon Schofield is hosting a celebration at Government House tonight at 5 p.m.
“Over the last forty years, the Regina Transition House has provided thousands of women and children with a safe place to stay and a renewed sense of hope for the future,” Justice Minister and Attorney General Gordon Wyant said. “The government has been a proud partner of the Regina Transition House since it opened in 1976, and we look forward to continuing our work with them for many years to come.”
The Transition House has expanded its programming considerably since it first opened and now offers a wide range of supports such as outreach services, children’s programming and cultural programs. It also also serves a critical role in educating the public about interpersonal violence.
“It’s the strong commitment of our funders and supporters over the past four decades that has enabled us to make a difference in the lives of women and children fleeing domestic violence,” Regina Transition House Executive Director Maria Hendrika said. “We’re truly grateful to our host, Lieutenant Governor Solomon Schofield, for the opportunity to celebrate this anniversary with the people who have supported us and shared in our successes over the last forty years.”
