Saskatchewan Celebrates National Aboriginal Day

National Aboriginal Day takes place tomorrow, June 21, and citizens across Saskatchewan and Canada are encouraged to participate in many special events honouring the culture and achievements of First Nations, Métis and Inuit people.

“The time-honoured traditions of Aboriginal people are an intricate part of our province’s history,” Minister responsible for First Nations, Métis and Northern Affairs Jim Reiter said.  “This special day provides an opportunity to not only celebrate and reflect on those traditions, but also to recognize Saskatchewan’s many Indigenous communities and associations.”


National Aboriginal Day was first proclaimed in 1996.  It traditionally falls on June 21, which is the first day of summer and the summer solstice, the longest day of the year.

The Government of Saskatchewan is pleased to have been able to support a number of National Aboriginal Day events in Moose Jaw, North Battleford and Regina.
