Construction Set to Begin for a New Affordable Housing Project in Prince Albert

The Government of Canada and the Province of Saskatchewan, along with Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) Prince Albert Branch, officially announced funding for the construction of an eight-unit rental housing project for individuals with complex needs.

Ralph Goodale, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, on behalf of Jean-Yves Duclos, Minister of Families, Children and Social Development and Minister Responsible for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), along with Member of the Legislative Assembly for Prince Albert Carlton Joe Hargrave, on behalf of Social Services Minister and Minister responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation (SHC) Donna Harpauer, and CMHA Prince Albert Branch Executive Director Doug Kinar, made the announcement today.

“Our government is committed to investing in affordable housing all across Canada,” said Goodale.  “Thanks to all our partners, eight new apartments will be built in the great community of Prince Albert.  These four-plexes will offer a safe and affordable place to live for Canadians who will call this home.”

“Providing an affordable place for individuals in greatest need to live in safety and comfort is a top priority to our government,” Hargrave said.  “These homes address the need for this type of housing in Prince Albert and support our most vulnerable citizens.  We congratulate all our partners in this project which will further our plan to keep Saskatchewan strong.”

“I am thrilled the Governments of Canada and Saskatchewan are supporting CMHA PA Branch by providing funding to construct affordable housing units for people living with mental illnesses,” Kinar said.  “We will continue to provide support for people living with mental illnesses through our programs and services, including providing supportive housing.”

Quick facts:
  • Located at 581 and 585 7th Street East in Prince Albert, the project consists of the new construction of eight one-bedroom rental units in two four-plexes.  Each unit is approximately 560 square feet (52 square metres).
  • The Federal and Provincial Governments, through CMHC and SHC, are jointly contributing up to $900,000 toward the eight units under the Canada-Saskatchewan Investment in Affordable Housing (IAH) 2014-2019 Agreement.
  • An additional $390,000 in funding will be provided by CMHA in the form of mortgage financing.
  • CMHA is a non-profit corporation which has been operating in Prince Albert since 1997.  Focusing on assisting those with mental health illness, it also provides a drop-in center (The Nest), vocational, recreation, education and wellness programming, as well as a community kitchen and a lunch program.
  • Independent living supports for tenants will be provided by CMHA, with additional support services and programming from the Prince Albert Parkland Health Region.
  • This investment supports the Saskatchewan Poverty Reduction Strategy goal of ensuring Saskatchewan people have affordable, safe, secure and stable housing.
