Four Habitat for Humanity (Habitat) partner families in Regina are official homeowners after receiving keys to their brand new homes at a special ceremony today.
The province, through Saskatchewan Housing Corporation, contributed $260,000 to help Habitat construct the four homes located at 1033 Edgar Street. The four units are part of Habitat’s multi-unit family housing development, Haultain Crossing, which will house a total of 62 Habitat partner families upon completion.
Habitat for Humanity and the Trades and Skills Construction Apprenticeship Program (TASCAP) are working in partnership to provide education and hands-on experience with TASCAP students on site during the construction of the project. TASCAP enables Grade 11 and 12 students in Regina who are interested in the construction and trades industry to gain real world experience as they obtain high school credits and a head start in the construction and trades industry. Qualified instructors lead students through the entire build from the foundation up. Habitat provides the building materials.
“Our government is pleased to assist Habitat for Humanity and its many partners and volunteers to give hard-working Saskatchewan families a hand up,” Regina Gardiner Park MLA Gene Makowsky said on behalf of Social Services Minister and Minister responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation Donna Harpauer. “Supporting families to break the cycle of poverty and become homeowners is an invaluable investment, and a key part of keeping Saskatchewan strong. We congratulate Habitat and TASCAP for another successful build and, most importantly, we are proud to assist four families launch a brighter future.”
“We are thrilled to welcome the first four families of our Phase I home to Haultain Crossing,” Habitat for Humanity Regina CEO Kelly Holmes-Binns said. “Together with Trades and Skills, and Campus Regina, we have developed a unique partnership that directly impacts the future of our community. Students in the TASCAP program expand their career options while building homes so hard-working, low-income families can break the cycle of poverty through homeownership. Habitat for Humanity Regina is proud of this partnership, and we are excited for it to continue in the future.”
Since March 2009, the Government of Saskatchewan has committed $7.85 million to Habitat Saskatchewan chapters for low- to moderate-income families across the province in the 13 communities of Duck Lake, Fort Qu’Appelle, Humboldt, Lloydminster, Melfort, Moose Jaw, Nipawin, Battleford region, Prince Albert, Regina, Saskatoon, Weyburn and Yorkton.
Habitat’s innovative delivery model provides opportunities for families to stabilize their housing, and to achieve their homeownership goals. Each partner family selected by Habitat contributes 500 partnering hours in building their home, or other Habitat homes.
