Province and Habitat for Humanity Make Dream of Homeownership a Reality for Fort Qu'Appelle Family

Released on June 10, 2016

A Habitat for Humanity partner family was presented keys to their brand new home in Fort Qu’Appelle today.

Moosomin MLA Steven Bonk on behalf Social Services Minister and Minister responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation Donna Harpauer, representatives from Saskatchewan Housing Corporation and Habitat for Humanity, as well as other Fort Qu’Appelle dignitaries and residents joined in the celebration to welcome the family to their new home.  The project is also supported by the Town of Fort Qu’Appelle.

“Initiatives like Habitat for Humanity support our government’s commitment to provide safe and affordable housing to Saskatchewan residents,” Bonk said.  “I am pleased to see this family move into their incredible new home, and proud that our government was able to help them achieve this important milestone of homeownership as part of our goal to keep Saskatchewan strong.”

Habitat for Humanity Regina, Regina Trades and Skills, and Prairie Valley School Division worked in partnership to utilize the Trades and Skills Construction Apprenticeship Program (TASCAP) in Fort Qu’Appelle.

“We are so excited to welcome another family home in Fort Qu’Appelle,” Habitat for Humanity Regina CEO Kelly Holmes-Binns said.  “Through their unique partnership Habitat for Humanity, Prairie Valley School Division and Regina Trades and Skills have a direct impact on the future of our community.  The TASCAP program expands students’ career options and builds homes so hard-working, low-income families can break the cycle of poverty through homeownership.  It is a partnership that we are proud to be a part of.”

TASCAP provides high school students with real-life education and relevant training in a variety of construction trade areas.  All students participating in TASCAP are on-site daily, building a home for Habitat partner families.  Qualified instructors lead students through the entire build from the foundation up.

The four-bedroom bungalow home is located at 245 Craigleith Avenue in Fort Qu’Appelle and is approximately 976 square feet, or 90 square metres, on the main floor and also has a finished basement.

Since March 2009, the Government of Saskatchewan has invested $7.85 million in Habitat Saskatchewan chapters.  This funding has resulted in 134 homes being built across the province for low- to moderate-income families in 13 communities, including the Battleford region, Duck Lake, Fort Qu’Appelle, Humboldt, Lloydminster, Melfort, Moose Jaw, Nipawin, Prince Albert, Regina, Saskatoon, Weyburn, and Yorkton.

Habitat’s innovative delivery model provides opportunities for families to stabilize their housing, and to achieve their homeownership goals.  Each partner family selected by Habitat contributes 500 partnering hours in building their home, or other Habitat homes.
