The Governments of Canada and Saskatchewan, along with the City of Regina and Gabriel Housing Corporation, today celebrated the official opening of six new rental units for families with complex needs.
Ralph Goodale, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, on behalf of Jean-Yves Duclos, Minister of Families, Children and Social Development and Minister Responsible for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), along with Member of the Legislative Assembly for Regina Pasqua Muhammad Fiaz on behalf of Social Services Minister and Minister responsible for the Saskatchewan Housing Corporation Donna Harpauer, City of Regina Mayor Michael Fougere and Gabriel Housing Corporation Chief Executive Officer Doug Moran, made the announcement today.
The building consists of two two-bedroom units, two three-bedroom units and two four-bedroom units. Located at 2059 Edward Street, the six-unit facility will serve Regina and surrounding area and include support services that empower families to attain a healthy lifestyle in many aspects of their lives including the home, employment and education/training, as well as spiritual and recreational needs.
“Through investments in affordable housing, our government is providing assistance to those who need it most here in Saskatchewan and in all corners of the country,” said Goodale. “With our partners, we are providing a helping hand for families in need, and in doing so, we are contributing to the economic and social well-being of the entire community.”
“We are proud to work with the Government of Canada, the City of Regina and Gabriel Housing Corporation to help families secure housing with the supports that they require,” Fiaz said. “Our government is working hard to meet the need for affordable and diverse housing in this province, and keep Saskatchewan strong.”
“Gabriel Housing provides a very special, much-needed service to our citizens,” Fougere said. “Having access to not only affordable housing but also built-in support services can be a life-changing opportunity for those in need. The City of Regina is so proud to be able to contribute to such a worthy undertaking.”
“It is with great pleasure that along with our partners, the Government of Canada, Saskatchewan Housing Corporation and the City of Regina, we are able to provide another six affordable family units to the Aboriginal community in Regina,” Moran said. “The new units will enable Gabriel Housing Corporation to further meet the demand for quality, safe and affordable housing, reduce the number of Aboriginal families on our wait list and provide the necessary support services to the families so that they can maintain and live in a healthy home environment.”
Quick facts:
- The federal and provincial governments, through CMHC and Saskatchewan Housing Corporation, are jointly contributing $810,000 under the $92 million Canada-Saskatchewan Investment in Affordable Housing (IAH) 2014-2019 Agreement.
- Gabriel Housing Corporation provided a combined contribution of $758,000 in mortgage financing and land equity.
- The City of Regina contributed $90,000 toward the project.
- Gabriel Housing Corporation strives to contribute, manage and administer affordable and safe housing to Métis urban dwellers.
- Gabriel Housing Corporation and Aboriginal Family Services Centre (AFSC) have signed a Service/Rental Agreement for the building.
