Join in the Fun at Back to Batoche Celebrations

Released on July 13, 2016

One of Saskatchewan’s top heritage celebrations starts tomorrow and the provincial government is encouraging everyone to join in the fun as thousands of visitors from across North America converge on Batoche July 14-17.

The Back to Batoche Festival is the continent’s largest commemoration of Métis culture, traditions and heritage.  It takes place at the Batoche Métis Cultural Grounds, not far from the Parks Canada-Batoche National Historic Site.

“Batoche has been a gathering place for Métis people for nearly 145 years and this festival is an ongoing testament to their proud spirit,” Government Relations Minister Jim Reiter said.  “Our government is pleased to be one of the many sponsors of this special community celebration.”

The festival includes square dancing, fiddling and jigging competitions, bannock baking demonstrations, children’s activities and nightly concerts, as well as a ceremony at the local Métis veteran monument.

The government has provided $20,000 in sponsorship support to Back to Batoche.   Batoche MLA Delbert Kirsch will represent the government at official opening ceremonies on the morning of July 15.
