Construction to Start for New Affordable Rental Housing in La Loche

Released on August 16, 2016

The construction of a new affordable rental housing project in the Village of La Loche officially broke ground today.  The 14 unit project will be built in La Loche’s new subdivision and consist of three 2-bedroom duplexes (six units) and two 3-bedroom duplexes (four units) for families, in addition to one 1-bedroom four-plex (four units) for singles.

Ralph Goodale, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, on behalf of Jean-Yves Duclos, Minister of Families, Children and Social Development and Minister Responsible for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), Social Services Minister and Minister responsible for the Saskatchewan Housing Corporation (SHC) Donna Harpauer, and Village of La Loche Mayor Kevin Janvier, made the announcement today.

“Our government is determined to find meaningful, durable solutions to the challenges facing the community, and to do that by listening from the bottom up, not by imposing from the top down,” said Goodale.  “Today's groundbreaking is an important step forward to help those most in need build better lives in La Loche.”

“The social and community benefits that will be realized as a result of the construction of these 14 new homes are substantial,” Harpauer said.  “These units will target households in need and follow through on our government’s promise to improve the social and economic conditions in La Loche.  We are pleased to work with La Loche and other key stakeholders to put this plan into action and keep Saskatchewan strong.”

“The federal and provincial governments’ support and commitment to La Loche’s housing needs is most welcome and appreciated,” Janvier said.  “The development of these rental units, through a partnership agreement with Methy Housing Corporation, will also have a significant impact in our community by alleviating overcrowded situations, creating local training and employment opportunities, and stimulating our local economy through spending by construction workers on local goods and services.”

Quick facts:
  • Methy Housing Corporation and Methy Construction and Maintenance Corporation are two non-profits owned by the municipality.  Together they provide property management, project management and construction services in La Loche, including this project.
  • The Federal and Provincial Governments, through CMHC and SHC, are jointly contributing about $1.4 million toward the construction of the 14 units under the Canada-Saskatchewan Investment in Affordable Housing (IAH) 2014-2019 Agreement.
  • The funding balance of approximately $630,000 will be provided by private lender financing and community contributions (cash, land and in-kind).
  • The 2-bedroom duplexes are 1,600 square feet per unit or 149.64 square metres, the 3-bedroom duplexes are 1,800 square feet per unit or 167.23 square metres and the 1-bedroom four-plex is 608 square feet per unit or 56.49 square metres.
  • Completion is targeted for fall 2017.
