Tonight Education Minister Don Morgan will join students, teachers, members of the community and representatives from Greater Saskatoon Catholic Schools to recognize École St. Matthew School’s 50th anniversary while also celebrating the recent expansion and renovation of the school. The Government of Saskatchewan has committed more than $14 million toward this project.
“It’s a fitting way to commemorate St. Matthew’s 50th anniversary by also celebrating this important project that will ensure that students can enjoy learning in this great school for many years to come,” Morgan said. “I want to thank the Greater Saskatoon Catholic School Division for being a great partner on this project and for their commitment to excellence in education.”
The expansion to the K-8 school includes nearly 8,000 square feet of additional space. Upgrades include a new state-of-the-art gymnasium, 10 new classrooms, five renovated classrooms, a practical and applied arts space, music room, art room, science lab and a library and resource centre.
“Years of work have been put into this project,” Greater Saskatoon Catholic Schools’ Board of Education Chair Diane Boyko said. “I thank all the parents, staff, community members and the Ministry of Education for coming together to make this expansion and renovation a reality. It’s very fitting that we officially re-open the school during the school’s 50th anniversary celebrations. I can’t think of a better way for the St. Matthew community to celebrate this new beginning.”
“I can’t describe how happy I am to be able to celebrate both St. Matthew’s 50th Anniversary and the re-opening of our new facility,” École St. Matthew School Principal François Rivard said. “It is no surprise that our students, staff and parent community tirelessly worked to make this day happen. I look forward to what the next 50 years of Catholic education will bring.”
St. Matthew is a French immersion school serving more than 400 students.
Since 2007, the government has committed approximately $966 million toward 65 major school capital projects and numerous smaller projects such as portable classrooms and preventative maintenance and renewal.
