Olysky Limited Partnership Fined $98,000 for Workplace Fatality

On March 21, 2016, Olysky Limited Partnership, operating as Big Sky Farms, received a fine of $98,000 for a violation of occupational health and safety legislation in Humboldt Provincial Court.

Olysky Limited Partnership pleaded guilty under Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) legislation to one count of failing to ensure that the operator of a unit of powered mobile equipment, use a seat-belt or other restraining device.

Charges were laid after a workplace fatality on April 23, 2014 where a worker was thrown from the cab of a tractor.  The incident occurred near Burr, Saskatchewan.

OHS legislation requires all operators be trained to safely operate powered mobile equipment before using it on the job.  Employers must keep documents on file showing operators have been trained.

While everyone is responsible for workplace safety, employers carry the greatest responsibility because they have authority and control over the place of employment.
