Province and Habitat for Humanity Support Two Prince Albert Families

Released on September 24, 2015

A Habitat for Humanity (Habitat) partner family is a new homeowner after receiving keys to their new home at a dedication ceremony held in Prince Albert today.  The province, through Saskatchewan Housing Corporation (SHC), contributed $50,000 to help support the project, located at 462 - 19th Street East.  In addition, ground was broken for another Habitat home at 452 - 19th Street East.  The province is contributing $65,000 to support the construction of this home.

“Each Habitat home is special because it represents a new beginning for a hard working family seeking a safe, quality home,” Prince Albert Northcote MLA Victoria Jurgens said on behalf of Social Services Minister and Minister responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation Donna Harpauer.  “Habitat and its partners all deserve recognition for coming together to strengthen communities and keep Saskatchewan strong.  Our government is proud to support Habitat and, most importantly, assist in bringing homeownership to Saskatchewan families.”

“We are quite proud to celebrate this home dedication,” Habitat for Humanity Prince Albert Executive Director Jan Adamson said.  “It’s a big undertaking when looking back to the very beginning, and for that Habitat is forever thankful for the help of our community.  We would like to acknowledge Carlton High School carpentry students and instructors, many Habitat volunteers, Western Financial Group for their donation, and the ongoing support of the province.  It is truly a collaboration of complete strangers offering families a hand up.  From this complete Habitat home, we are pleased to take a few footsteps west and begin another family’s journey to building a home and putting roots down in Prince Albert.”

Since March 2009, the province’s overall commitment to Habitat totals $7.85 million.

This funding supports builds in 13 communities across the province including Duck Lake, Fort Qu’Appelle, Humboldt, Lloydminster, Melfort, Moose Jaw, Nipawin, North Battleford, Prince Albert, Regina, Saskatoon, Weyburn and Yorkton.

The province now provides $65,000 per home in funding for homes starting construction.  This is up from the $50,000 per home which was provided prior to March 2014.

These Habitat homes are single family bungalows approximately 1,000 square feet, or 93 square metres, each with a partially completed basement.

Habitat’s innovative delivery model provides opportunities for families to stabilize their housing, and to achieve their homeownership goals.  Each partner family selected by Habitat contributes 500 partnering hours in building their home, or other Habitat homes.

Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit organization working toward a world where everyone has a safe and decent place to live.  The organization mobilizes volunteers and partners to build homes that provide families of low-income with access to affordable homeownership.
