Public Memorial Service for 75th Anniversary of Saskatchewan Residents who Fought in the Battle of Britain

Released on September 18, 2015

This Saturday, September 19, members of the public are invited to a memorial service beginning at 10:30 a.m. at the Saskatchewan War Memorial on the Legislative Building grounds to honour the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain.

Please join us as we solemnly remember those who helped defend Britain from German air attack and ultimately prevented a planned invasion by sea.

Of the more than 100 pilots from Canada who fought bravely in the Battle of Britain, 15 were from Saskatchewan.  The air battle raged from July 10 to October 31, 1940.

“The Battle of Britain changed the outcome of the Second World War and we owe an enormous debt to the valiant young pilots who fought and died in the air over the English Channel,” Battle of Britain Committee Chairman retired Lieutenant Colonel Terry Lyons, C.D. said.  “I encourage everyone to join us in remembering them.”

Wreaths will be laid in remembrance of the contribution to our freedom made by many young Canadians.  There will be a fly-past from 15 Wing Moose Jaw.

“Forever grateful for the sacrifices they made, may we continue to pay our respects and honour those whose valour and courage paved the way for the freedom we now enjoy today,” Provincial Military Liaison D.F. (Yogi) Huyghebaert said.

Members of the public are welcome to attend the ceremony at the Saskatchewan War Memorial just west of the Legislative Building on Memorial Way.
