Major Expansion and Renovation to Churchill Community High School Celebrated

Released on September 16, 2015

Education Minister Don Morgan joined students, teachers, members of the community and representatives from the Northern Lights School Division to celebrate the completion of a major expansion and renovation project at Churchill Community High School.  The government contributed more than $27 million toward the project.

“With a growing student population, more modern facilities were needed to provide a first-class educational experience for the high school students and teachers here in La Ronge,” Morgan said.  “This investment demonstrates a commitment in our Saskatchewan Plan for Growth to improving the quality of life for our students, teachers and communities.”

More than half of Churchill Community High School was newly constructed and includes an additional 1,700 square metres of space where students can enjoy a new gym, multi-purpose room, learning centre, expanded Industrial Arts room, and a dental lab.  The school can now accommodate more than 700 Grade 7-12 students and 32 child care spaces.

"It is my hope the entire Churchill Community High School family can come together at this time to reflect on how much we have achieved and celebrate all that is ahead in the future," Northern Lights School Division Chairperson Lorna Black said.

"We appreciate our new school more and more," Churchill Community High School Principal Martina Cain said.  “It is a wonderful facility for our students.  The new gym, along with our new permanent stage and theater area, are two venues in our school which will enhance learning and increase the opportunities for many activities and events, now and in the years to come, both at the school and the community level."

Since 2007, the Government of Saskatchewan has committed approximately $966 million toward 65 major school capital projects and numerous smaller projects such as portable classrooms and preventative maintenance and renewal.
