Saskatchewan Proclaims September 14 Canadian Federation of University Women Day

Released on September 14, 2015

September 14 has been proclaimed as Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW) Day by the Government of Saskatchewan.

“Saskatchewan women are significant contributors to the economic growth of our province,” Minister responsible for the Status of Women Donna Harpauer said.  “Education is critical, and I am pleased that Saskatchewan’s CFUW chapters support post-secondary education with scholarships for women to complete their education.”

“Our government is proud to recognize the commitment of CFUW in making post-secondary education a priority for Saskatchewan women,” Advanced Education Minister Scott Moe said.  “There are many benefits to a post-secondary education and it is encouraging to see how many woman are taking advantage of the opportunity right here in Saskatchewan.”

“This is the fifth year that CFUW Day has been celebrated in Saskatchewan, and the clubs have chosen ‘Empowerment of Women through Education’ as the theme of our celebration,” CFUW Saskatchewan Council Chair Margaret Hendry said.  “We appreciate this acknowledgment of our organization in the province, and it spurs us on to continue to advocate for a better life for all women and girls.”

As of last fall, there were more than 20,500 female students attending the two universities in Saskatchewan.  This represents more than 55 per cent of the student population.

CFUW is a charitable organization that works to improve the status of women.  It also promotes human rights, public education, social justice and peace.  In Canada, there are more than 10,000 CFUW members and 117 clubs.  Saskatchewan has 200 members with chapters in Prince Albert, Regina, Saskatoon, Weyburn and Yorkton.

Saskatchewan’s CFUW clubs raise $40,000 annually in scholarship money.  They also support early learning centres and a variety of community projects.
