A Habitat for Humanity partner family in Melfort will soon improve their quality of life through homeownership, with $65,000 in financial support from the Government of Saskatchewan through the Saskatchewan Housing Corporation. A ground-breaking ceremony was held today at 233 Lendrum Street.
“Habitat for Humanity represents hope for families in need of a safe, quality home that they can afford,” Melfort MLA Kevin Phillips said on behalf of Social Services Minister and Minister responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation Donna Harpauer. “Our government is pleased to support Habitat’s efforts to strengthen communities and bring homeownership to families, thereby keeping Saskatchewan strong and empowering families to improve their overall quality of life.”
“Prince Albert Affiliate is happy to announce the start to another Habitat home in Melfort,”Habitat for Humanity Prince Albert Executive Director Jan Adamson said. “The Melfort Chapter of Habitat for Humanity has been able make homeownership a reality for families, with the help of local donors, volunteers and the ongoing generosity of our Provincial Government. It’s a great day to celebrate with the family on their exciting journey ahead, and also to thank the great province wide team we have behind us to make this happen.”
This is the second Habitat project in Melfort and consists of a three-bedroom bi-level home approximately 1,000 square feet or 93 square metres across the main floor. The basement will be unfinished.
Since March 2009, the Government of Saskatchewan has committed $7.85 million to Habitat Saskatchewan chapters for low- to moderate-income families across the province in the 13 communities of Duck Lake, Fort Qu’Appelle, Humboldt, Lloydminster, Melfort, Moose Jaw, Nipawin, North Battleford, Prince Albert, Regina, Saskatoon, Weyburn and Yorkton.
In March 2014, the Government of Saskatchewan agreed with Habitat’s request for all new and any remaining funds to be made available to Habitat at $65,000 per unit compared to earlier funding of $50,000 per unit. Habitat’s innovative delivery model provides opportunities for families to stabilize their housing and to achieve their homeownership goals. Each partner family selected by Habitat contributes 500 partnering hours in building their home, or other Habitat homes.
Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit organization working toward a world where everyone has a safe and decent place to live. The organization mobilizes volunteers and partners to build homes that provide families of low-income with access to affordable homeownership.
