Province Supports Construction of Third Habitat for Humanity Home in Fort Qu'Appelle

Released on September 10, 2015

Construction of a third Habitat for Humanity home in Fort Qu’Appelle is officially underway, thanks to $65,000 in funding assistance from the province through the Saskatchewan Housing Corporation (SHC).

The Town of Fort Qu’Appelle donated the land located at 245 Craigleith Avenue.  The project consists of a single family, four-bedroom bungalow that will be approximately 976 square feet or 90 square metres across the main floor, with a finished basement.  Habitat for Humanity Regina, Regina Trades and Skills, and Prairie Valley School Division are working in partnership to involve the Trades and Skills Construction Apprenticeship Program (TASCAP) in Fort Qu’Appelle.

The home will be built by TASCAP students who will be on site daily to learn from qualified instructors how to build a home from the ground up.  TASCAP engages and trains high school students in a variety of construction trade areas.

“Our government is proud to support Habitat for Humanity’s third build in Fort Qu’Appelle,” Deputy Premier and Indian Head-Milestone MLA Don McMorris said on behalf of Social Services Minister and Minister responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation Donna Harpauer.  “This is also a great opportunity for students to help a local family in need of a home, as well as learn skills that could potentially lead to careers in the housing construction industry.  Supporting projects like this is a part of our vision to keep Saskatchewan strong and to make this province the best place in Canada to live, work and raise a family.”

"We are excited to have another semester of students starting on the third house in Fort Qu'Appelle,” Habitat for Humanity Regina CEO Kelly Holmes-Binns said.  “These students make a significant contribution to Habitat for Humanity Regina each year.  Together, Habitat for Humanity Regina and TASCAP have a direct impact on the future of our community, by expanding students career options and building homes so hard-working, low-income Regina families can break the cycle of poverty through homeownership.”

Since March 2009, the Government of Saskatchewan has committed $7.85 million to Habitat Saskatchewan chapters for low- to moderate-income families across the province in the 13 communities of Duck Lake, Fort Qu’Appelle, Humboldt, Lloydminster, Melfort, Moose Jaw, Nipawin, North Battleford, Prince Albert, Regina, Saskatoon, Weyburn and Yorkton.

The province now provides $65,000 per home in funding for homes starting construction.  This is up from the $50,000 per home which was provided prior to March 2014.

Habitat’s innovative delivery model provides opportunities for families to stabilize their housing, and to achieve their homeownership goals.  Each partner family selected by Habitat contributes 500 partnering hours in building their home, or other Habitat homes.
