Saskatchewan Celebrates Veterinary Technician Week

Released on October 9, 2015

Today, Agriculture Minister Lyle Stewart proclaimed October 11-17 as Veterinary Technician Week in the province in order to recognize the many crucial roles that veterinary technologists play in the field of veterinary medicine.

“Veterinary technologists are dedicated professionals whose daily work ensures animal health care excellence in Saskatchewan,” Stewart said.  “Saskatchewan is proud to celebrate the essential roles veterinary technologists play in veterinary clinics, commercial livestock operations, laboratories, academic and research institutions, veterinary pharmaceutical and supply companies and government ministries."

There are more than 400 registered veterinary technologists in Saskatchewan whose daily work involves delivery of progressive, compassionate and humane veterinary medical care for all animals.  As part of the veterinary health care team, veterinary technologists promote public health, food safety and economic prosperity for livestock producers, in terms of prevention and control of animal-related diseases.

“This week celebrates all veterinary technologists who champion animal health care excellence, and who demonstrate the highest ethical standards in both their veterinary related work and their professional advancement,” Saskatchewan Association of Veterinary Technologists President-Elect Lois Ridgway said.

The proclamation of Veterinary Technician Week in Saskatchewan coincides with the observation of National Veterinary Technician Week across Canada and the United States.

In Saskatchewan, the week is sponsored by the Saskatchewan Association of Veterinary Technologists, which has been representing veterinary technologists in the province since 1984.
