Today Finance Minister Kevin Doherty, on behalf of Education Minister Don Morgan, joined representatives from the Regina Catholic School Division, Elders, students, teachers and members of the community to celebrate the start of construction on the new Sacred Heart Community School. The Government of Saskatchewan is contributing approximately $27 million toward the project.
“Our government recognized the need to provide the students and staff of Sacred Heart with an innovative and modern Catholic school that will also respect the rich history of the current building,” Doherty said. ”I’m pleased to join this great community and celebrate the start of construction on a site that will soon be home to a state-of-the-art school for generations of children and families to enjoy.”
The design will accommodate up to 700 students ranging from Prekindergarten to Grade 8 and offer a wide variety of educational and community benefits, including more natural light, innovative learning spaces, new gymnasium, common area, library and resource centre, dedicated community space, and a 51-space childcare centre. As well, many of the architectural components of the existing school will be incorporated into the new school, including some of the brick work, tyndall stone, columns, and the Sacred Heart statue.
“We could not be more pleased with the beginning of construction on the new Sacred Heart Community School,” Regina Catholic School Division Board Chair Rob Bresciani said. “As our school division has experienced unprecedented growth, it is imperative that we provide our students with the necessary infrastructure and resources for 21st century learning. We are greatly appreciative of the Government of Saskatchewan’s commitment to fund the rebuild.”
“Building a brand new school is cause for great excitement for our students and their families, our staff, and the North Central community,” Sacred Heart Community School Principal Dave Magnusson said. “As a staff, we are proud to educate our students at the new state-of-the-art Sacred Heart Community School, who will be the future leaders in the community, the city and throughout the world.”
Construction is expected to be completed by fall of 2017.
Since 2007, the government has committed approximately $966 million toward 65 major school capital projects and numerous smaller projects such as portable classrooms and preventative maintenance and renewal.
