Scholarship of Honour Recognizes Armed Forces Members and Families

Advanced Education Minister Scott Moe recognized 18 new recipients of the Saskatchewan Scholarship of Honour at the Saskatchewan Legislature today.

The scholarship honours returning soldiers as well as the spouses and children of injured or fallen members of Canada’s Armed Forces.  The scholarship provides a one-time award of $5,000 toward post-secondary education.

“Our government appreciates the dedication and courage of the many men and women serving in Canada’s Armed Forces,” Moe said.  “We are pleased to honour their bravery and commitment to Canada.  Because of their sacrifices, we live in a country of freedom and peace.”

Since the Scholarship was started in 2009, 147 scholarships have been awarded, totalling $735,000.  Twelve of these recipients are family members of injured or fallen soldiers.


Eligible candidates must be current or former Saskatchewan residents.  They must be returning service men and women who actively served in designated military operations in the Canadian Forces (Regular or Reserves) after January 2001.  The spouse and/or child of permanently disabled or deceased individuals who served in designated military operations after January 2001 may also be eligible.  All candidates must be enrolled in a recognized Canadian post-secondary institution.  All eligible candidates are encouraged to apply.

The Ministry of Advanced Education works with the federal government to distribute scholarship information to returning soldiers and their families.  Along with the Scholarship of Honour, the Government of Saskatchewan wants to make it easier for veterans and military personnel to access post-secondary training.

“We recognize the valuable experience veterans and military personnel acquire during their military careers,” Moe said.  “This is why we are continuing to work with our post-secondary institutions to enhance and expand credit recognition of military service.”
