New PreK-12 School in Hudson Bay Hosts Grand Opening

Today Education Minister Don Morgan joined students, teachers, members of the community and representatives from North East School Division to officially celebrate the opening of the Hudson Bay Community School.  The Government of Saskatchewan has committed more than $27 million toward this facility.

“By building a new school in Hudson Bay we are building a brighter future for these young people and this entire community,” Morgan said.  “This new facility will give students and teachers access to a modern, safe and state-of-the-art learning environment that will encourage their passion for learning.”

The new school boasts room for more than 400 students ranging from Prekindergarten to Grade 12 and includes a 36 space child care centre.  There were also $451,000 in community-funded enhancements to the school, including the addition of a mezzanine to the gymnasium, an expansion to the practical and applied arts wing and a student lounge.

“There has been a tremendous level of commitment, collaboration and hard work from all sectors - the ministry, our division staff, the entire community of Hudson Bay and not the least, the students and staff of Hudson Bay Community School,” North East School Division Board Chair Kathy Ponath said.  “Our board is grateful for this commitment from the province and the community and we are extremely proud of the work that has been done to build this state-of-the-art school.  We value the positive school culture that will be supported by such a facility - truly a work of community.”

“It is with great excitement that the entire school community of Hudson Bay looks forward to the ribbon cutting ceremony,” Hudson Bay Community School Principal Louise Gel said.  “This has truly been a combined effort to make this an amazing place of learning and the students and staff of Hudson Bay thank everyone involved, at all levels, for their support in this massive and exciting project.”

Since 2007, the government has committed approximately $966 million toward 65 major school capital projects and numerous smaller projects such as portable classrooms and preventative maintenance and renewal.
