Annual Service of Remembrance Honours Public Service Veterans

Released on November 4, 2015

Deputy Premier and Minister responsible for the Public Service Commission Don McMorris along with Provincial Secretary Nadine Wilson joined dignitaries and representatives of the provincial public service this morning to lay wreaths in remembrance of those who sacrificed their lives serving our province and country.  The wreath laying took place as part of the province’s annual Service of Remembrance for the Public Service.

“Today reminds us of the thousands of women and men from across Saskatchewan and Canada who gave their lives to keep us safe,” McMorris said.  “We must never forget those who made the ultimate sacrifice, nor their family members and friends who they left behind.”

The service took place in the Legislative Building’s rotunda.  Following the service, the Provincial Secretary laid a wreath at the Saskatchewan War Memorial.

This year marks the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain, the first major battle fought entirely by air forces.  More than 100 Canadians flew in the Battle, and much of its success can be attributed to the 300 Canadians who served as ground crew, working around the clock to repair aircraft.

“Their duty was to serve; ours is to remember and honour them,” McMorris said.  “Holding the annual service of remembrance is just one of the ways we can carry out this duty, and show our gratitude for the public servants who have given their lives, and those continuing to serve their country today.”

The Saskatchewan War Memorial is located on the Legislative grounds just west of the Legislative Building on Memorial Way.  The memorial lists the names of Saskatchewan’s fallen from the First and Second World War, Korean War, peacetime and peacekeeping operations, and the Afghanistan mission.

The Saskatchewan Virtual War Memorial supplements the physical War Memorial, and is an online commemoration of Saskatchewan’s war dead.  The online database features more than 11,000 war casualties, along with their stories.
