Tea Lovers Choose Winning Government House 125th Anniversary Tea

Released on November 2, 2015

In preparation for the 125th anniversary of Government House in 2016 and the 25th season of the Government House Historical Society’s Victorian Teas, the public was asked to help select a special “signature” tea to mark these milestones during the month of October.  A garden tea blend was selected as the winner today; The Garden.

“It will be delicious both warm and chilled,” Government House Executive Director Carrie Ross said.  “This tea represents Government House’s legendary gardener, Mr. George Watt.  Mr. Watt grew strawberries and mint, the enhancing ingredients in this tea, starting in the early 1900s which we continue to grow currently in the beautiful Edwardian Gardens.”

Through a partnership between the Government House Historical Society, Government House and local tea merchant Cuppa T’, three unique specialty teas were blended to honour this National Historic Site.

Throughout October the public was invited to visit Government House to sample the three blends and cast a vote on which one they think should be the 125th anniversary tea.  When submitting their choice at the Steeped in Tradition exhibit, voters were also asked how they thought the tea they chose represents Government House.

“Diversity – Government House represents so many areas and is so inclusive and educational,” long-time supporter and Government House Foundation Trustee Mrs. Jacquie Clay Shumiatcher said.  “I could go on, but I need more tea!”

Now that the winning tea has been selected, it will be packaged and sold through the Government House Historical Society, at Government House and at Cuppa T’ at 2732 - 13th Avenue in Regina starting December 5, 2015, and throughout the anniversary year in 2016.

All proceeds from the sale of the tea will come back to the Government House Historical Society to support their on-going efforts to promote and preserve Government House. Government House is located at 4607 Dewdney Avenue, Regina and open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday to Sunday.  Admission is free and donations are accepted.
