Complaints Commission Says No Basis for Allegations Against Regina Police Service

Released on May 14, 2015

The Public Complaints Commission (PCC) has completed its investigation into recent allegations made against the Regina Police Service.

The complainant, Ms. Brooke Watson, alleged that on January 4, 2015, two Regina Police Service (RPS) officers took her into custody outside her apartment and drove her outside the city.

The complainant also alleged that the officers were verbally abusive to her while she was in custody, and that they took her coat, shoes, keys and cell phone from her and did not return them.

Over the course of the investigation the PCC conducted interviews, reviewed police reports, video and GPS data, as well as surveillance video from the apartment building where the complainant was taken into custody.  After reviewing this information, the PCC concluded that improper action by RPS officers in these circumstances is not supported and that no further investigation is required.

“The officers conducted themselves appropriately and professionally in the circumstances,” PCC Chair Brent Cotter said.

The PCC is an independent authority appointed by the government to provide civilian oversight of complaints against municipal police in Saskatchewan.  The role of the PCC is to ensure both the public and the police are guaranteed an impartial and thorough investigation and review of a public complaint.
