Renovation Project Goes Forward at Nokomis School

Released on May 8, 2015

The Government of Saskatchewan has committed $100,000 to assist Horizon School Division with a renovation project for Nokomis School that includes converting a portion of the building into multipurpose space.

The plan for the K-8 school includes converting the library and resource room into a multipurpose activity room and relocating the current library.  The project will also see the gym, two classrooms, a student space and two washrooms demolished that were not being utilized; the instructional space currently being used in the school will be maintained.

“I want to thank the students, staff and the community for their patience during this process and for the Horizon School Division’s hard work to help lead this important project forward,” Arm River-Watrous MLA Greg Brkich said on behalf of Education Minister Don Morgan.  “This renovation will not only benefit the community of Nokomis, but it will ensure the health and safety of the students and teachers, and help to improve their educational experience.”

The Government of Saskatchewan is committing $100,000 through the Emergent Funding Program to help pay for the demolition aspect of the project.

“The Community of Nokomis and Nokomis School Community Council, Horizon’s Board of Education, our students, staff and the Ministry of Education have all been instrumental in the planning process for the project at Nokomis School,” Horizon School Division Director of Education Kevin C. Garinger said.  “We are extremely grateful to the ministry and everyone involved in our system for ensuring that our students’ best interests and safety remains top priority.”

The demolition and renovations are expected to begin July 2015 and be completed by fall 2015.

Since 2007, the Government of Saskatchewan has committed approximately $948 million toward 65 major school capital projects and numerous smaller projects such as portable classrooms and preventative maintenance and renewal.

Horizon School Division is a rural school division that operates 41 schools across East Central Saskatchewan and encompasses 49,578 square kilometres.  Horizon School Division spans a geographic area from Bulyea in the south, Wakaw in the north, Foam Lake in the east and Viscount in the west.
