High school students from northern Saskatchewan are travelling to Regina to learn about government, the history of the province and career opportunities in Saskatchewan as part of the Charles Knight Youth Mentorship Program hosted by the Provincial Capital Commission. The students from Cumberland House, Dillon, La Loche, La Ronge, Hall Lake, Ile a La Crosse, Pelican Narrows, Stanley Mission and Wollaston Lake are touring the capital city Monday, May 4 and Tuesday, May 5.
“There was a time when young people left the province to pursue opportunities elsewhere,” Minister responsible for the Provincial Capital Commission Mark Docherty said. “That time has passed. Our hope is that these students will learn about the excellent education and job opportunities in Saskatchewan and that they will decide to build a life right here in our growing province.”
“Participating in this program is a wonderful opportunity for northern students,” Nisto Awasisak Memorial School Teacher Corinne Favel said. “As a mentor and counsellor, my hope is that our students will realize their potential and be inspired, that they will pursue post-secondary education and live full lives with vision, integrity and purpose as envisioned by their ancestors.”
Students will kick off the program Monday, May 4 with a tour of the University of Regina and the First Nations University of Canada, followed by a tour and scavenger hunt at Government House. In the afternoon, they will meet the Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan, tour the RCMP Training Academy and the Royal Saskatchewan Museum. Tuesday, May 5, the students will tour the Legislative Building, participate in a mock parliament with the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, and in the afternoon, will attend Question Period and meet with government officials to learn about opportunities in the public service.
