Two New Saskatoon Group Homes for Individuals with Autism Open

Released on May 1, 2015

Ten people with autism will have new places to call home, thanks to the opening of two new group homes in Saskatoon.  Saskatoon Sutherland MLA Paul Merriman, on behalf of Social Services Minister Donna Harpauer, joined Autism Services of Saskatoon Inc. and community members to celebrate the opening today in Saskatoon.

April was Autism Awareness Month in Saskatchewan.

“Our government congratulates Autism Services of Saskatoon Inc. on the official opening of these two new homes tailored to individuals with autism,” Merriman said.  “Our government is pleased to invest in projects and organizations like this that are helping to make life better for people with disabilities.  The development of these two group homes is a welcome addition to the Saskatoon community.”

The Ministry of Social Services has provided a total of $1.4 million in operating and capital funding for the project.  More than $1 million is being provided to Autism Services of Saskatoon for operational costs and leadership enhancements, and a total of $420,000 went toward capital funding for the projects.

“We would like to thank the Government of Saskatchewan for its funding commitment toward the completion of our two latest projects,” Autism Services of Saskatoon Executive Director Lynn Latta said.  “This partnership with the Government of Saskatchewan is instrumental to the achievement of our vision: that all individuals with autism have the opportunity to live with dignity and to reach their full potential.”

The new homes will support 10 individuals, including one individual from Valley View Centre.  The addition of these two new homes brings into operation four group homes, one group-living home, a supported living program, and a day program for the organization.

Autism Services of Saskatoon is a community-based organization that provides advocacy, support, education, recreational, social and residential programs and services to individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder, and their families.
