Saskatchewan Students Visit Legislative Building to Learn about Democracy

Released on March 19, 2015

Grade 8 students from three different Saskatchewan schools are visiting the Legislative Building to learn about the province’s democratic process.

“Saskatchewan’s youth are the future of our growing province,” Minister responsible for the Provincial Capital Commission Mark Docherty said.  “A good understanding of government will benefit them as they build careers and pursue issues they’re passionate about.”

More than 50 students from Hillcrest Public School in Estevan, St. Michael School in Weyburn and St. Augustine School in Wilcox will have the opportunity to sit in the House during Question Period, attend a panel discussion led by the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly involving both government and opposition MLAs, and tour the Legislative Building.

“The students are studying government this year and this event provides them with an enriching and first-hand opportunity to learn about the elected representatives of the people, various roles within the Legislative Assembly and the importance of government,” St. Augustine Principal Bill Sherven said.  “Having the experience of touring the Saskatchewan Legislative Building—the architecture, art and history—the students will no doubt come away with a deeper understanding and appreciation of government and the democratic process.”

This program, offered twice a year by the Provincial Capital Commission, supports a mandate to educate youth about the history and governance of our province while inspiring pride in Saskatchewan’s capital city.  The next event will take place in the fall of 2015.
