Province and Habitat for Humanity Support Three Duck Lake Families

Released on June 25, 2015

A Habitat for Humanity (Habitat) partner family achieved their dream of homeownership after receiving keys to their new home at a presentation held in Duck Lake today.  The province, through Saskatchewan Housing Corporation (SHC), contributed $50,000 to help build the home, located at 345 4th Street.

Two additional Habitat homes are planned for Duck Lake.  Sod was turned today to officially begin the construction of a Habitat home at 360 5th Street in Duck Lake.  Funding was also announced for a Habitat home nearing completion at 321 3rd Street.  The projects are being undertaken by the Duck Lake Chapter of Habitat for Humanity, with $130,000 in funding assistance ($65,000 for each home) from SHC.

“Each Habitat home represents the caring and sharing of many people coming together to support a Saskatchewan family dreaming of a home to call their own,” Batoche MLA Delbert Kirsch said on behalf of Social Services Minister and Minister responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation Donna Harpauer.  “Partnerships like these are keeping Saskatchewan strong, and our government is proud to support Habitat in building safe, quality homes for families in greatest housing need.”

“This is a proud day for the community of Duck Lake,” Habitat for Humanity Prince Albert President Morris Sawchuk said.  “As a result of desire, initiative and leadership, it is amazing what can be accomplished.”

Since March 2009, the province’s overall commitment to Habitat totals $7.85 million and includes the January 2013 approval of $600,000 from the Province’s Summit Action Fund.  This funding supports builds in 12 communities across the province including Duck Lake, Fort Qu’Appelle, Humboldt, Lloydminster, Melfort, Moose Jaw, Nipawin, Prince Albert, Regina, Saskatoon, Weyburn and Yorkton.

In March 2014, the Government of Saskatchewan agreed with Habitat’s request for all new and any remaining funds to be made available to Habitat at $65,000 per unit compared to earlier funding of $50,000 per unit.  Habitat’s innovative delivery model provides opportunities for families to stabilize their housing, and to achieve their homeownership goals.

Each partner family selected by Habitat contributes 500 partnering hours in building their home, or other Habitat homes.

Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit organization working toward a world where everyone has a safe and decent place to live.  The organization mobilizes volunteers and partners to build homes that provide families of low-income with access to affordable homeownership.
