School Divisions Receive Funding for French as a Second Language Instruction

Released on June 24, 2015

As part of the Canada-Saskatchewan Agreement on Minority Language Education and Second Official Language Instruction, the province awarded more than $65,000 in complementary grant funding to three school divisions in Saskatchewan in support of French education to benefit students.

“English and French are fundamental to the Canadian identity and our own Saskatchewan experience,” Education Minister Don Morgan said.  “Our government is committed to meeting the needs of our students in order to be successful and find opportunities here at home.”

In spring 2014, the Ministry of Education invited school divisions, francophone associations and post-secondary institutions to submit funding requests for complementary funding.
  • The grant has been awarded to the following divisions:Light of Christ Catholic School Division will receive $31,120 for The Effective Foundations for Language Achievement project.  The project focuses on improving student achievement and the development of teacher supports in oral language competency, reading and writing.
  • Prairie South School Division will receive $20,181 for The Rigorous Curriculum Design and French Authentic Performance Tasks.  The project focuses on working through the renewed French Immersion curriculum while utilizing the Rigorous Curriculum Design process.
  • Northern Lights School Division will receive $14,000 for The Technology Upgrade to purchase iPads for their students to increase achievement in French to match the rest of the French Immersion schools in Saskatchewan.
This is the first year school divisions will receive complementary funding for French as a second language instruction.  This one-time funding will help school divisions provide opportunities for cultural enrichment through the language and culture of Saskatchewan’s francophone community.
