Gravelbourg Breaks Ground on Major School Expansion Project

Released on June 16, 2015

Today Education Minister Don Morgan joined students, teachers, dignitaries and representatives from the Prairie South School Division to celebrate the start of a major school renovation and expansion project in Gravelbourg, which will combine the elementary and high school.  The Government of Saskatchewan has committed nearly $10 million toward this project.

“Our government is pleased to support this project that will provide the students of Gravelbourg with even more learning opportunities,” Morgan said.  “I know that this new and updated space will serve the community well for years to come.”

The project will include an additional 1,100 square metres of space as well as the renovation of the current high school – making room for approximately 300 students ranging from pre-kindergarten to Grade 12.  It will feature five new classrooms, practical and applied arts space, a new library and media centre, multipurpose and common areas, and new administration offices.  It will also connect the 47 space Play & Learn Daycare to the existing high school resulting in early learning, elementary and secondary education under one roof.

“The work that has been done to prepare for the new school by the staff and community has been exceptional,” Prairie South School Division Board Chair Dr. Shawn Davidson said.  “The board is thrilled that so many people have been willing to participate in the planning stages, and we can’t wait to see it come together.  It is a very exciting time for Prairie South Schools.”

“I believe the new school is a fresh start, not only for the students but for the community as well,” Grade 6 Student Chantel Hoag said.  “We are leaving history at Gravelbourg Elementary School, but we will make new memories in the new school."

Construction is scheduled to be complete by fall 2016.

Since 2007, the government has committed approximately $948 million toward 65 major school capital projects and numerous smaller projects such as portable classrooms and preventative maintenance and renewal.
