Government Providing $9 Million for Saskatchewan Advantage Scholarships

Released on June 12, 2015

More than 12,500 students graduating from Grade 12 this spring are now eligible for the $500 Saskatchewan Advantage Scholarship, to help reduce the cost of their post-secondary education.  In 2015-16, the provincial government is committing $9 million toward the scholarship, an increase of $2.3 million from last year.

“This funding will make post-secondary education more affordable for students by directly reducing the cost of their tuition,” Advanced Education Minister Scott Moe said.  “The Saskatchewan Advantage Scholarship is an important investment in the students who will keep our province strong in the future.”

The Saskatchewan Advantage Scholarship offers Grade 12 graduates $500 per year to a lifetime maximum of $2,000 to be applied to their tuition costs at a Saskatchewan post-secondary institution.  Students have up to 10 years after Grade 12 graduation to use the benefit.

Since its inception, more than 17,000 Saskatchewan students have been awarded scholarships worth nearly $14 million.  To be eligible for the scholarship students must:
  • Successfully graduate from Grade 12 in Saskatchewan, including Adult Basic Education and General Educational Development on or after January 1, 2012; and
  • Enroll at a Saskatchewan post-secondary institution in a program that is recognized for Canada-Saskatchewan student loans (certificate, diploma, and degree programs) or an apprenticeship program.  Post-secondary institutions apply for the scholarship on behalf of students.
Since 2007, the provincial government has provided $670 million in direct support to students through scholarships, such as the Saskatchewan Advantage Scholarship, bursaries and grants through the student loan program, the Saskatchewan Advantage Grant for Education Savings and the Graduate Retention Program.

More information on the scholarship is available on the Ministry of Advanced Education's website at www.saskatchewan.ca/live/post-secondary-education/scholarships-bursaries-and-grants/scholarships.
