New Day Program Facility Opens in Melville

Released on June 11, 2015

Thirty-six individuals with intellectual disabilities are celebrating the grand opening of their new day program facility in Melville.  Melville-Saltcoats MLA Bob Bjornerud, on behalf of Social Services Minister Donna Harpauer, was joined by Melville Mayor Walter Streelasky and other dignitaries today to take part in the ribbon cutting for Rail City Industries’ (RCI) newest facility.

The province invested a total of $1.9 million toward the project.  Total capital funding provided by the Ministry of Social Services was $750,000, plus a mortgage of up to $930,900.  RCI contributed $293,000 toward the total cost of the project as part of their fundraising commitment.

“Our government’s investment will provide the organization with support to expand their programming, in order to better support individuals with intellectual disabilities in the community,” Bjornerud said.  “Our government is committed to ensuring community-based organizations like RCI have the supports necessary to improve services for people with intellectual disabilities, so that they can further participate in the Melville community.”

The building, which originally served as a retail store, totals 12,100 square feet (1,124 m2).  The total developed square footage for the facility is 7,190 square feet (668 m2), which leaves approximately 5,000 square feet (465 m2) for future development.  The current space will feature a developmental and activity area, a commercial kitchen and a supportive living program.  RCI will continue to utilize their existing building in Melville for their SARCAN depot and paper recycling programs.

“Rail City Industries and the people we serve look forward to becoming more active participants in the community of Melville,” RCI Executive Director Patricia Switzer said.  “It is with pride and professionalism that we will connect with this great community.  Rail City Industries supports individuals with disabilities to live gratifying, successful and inclusive lives and our new facility will only make this venture more enjoyable and attainable.”

Since 1980, RCI has been supporting individuals with intellectual disabilities.  RCI provides individuals with intellectual disabilities in the Melville area with residential and day program supports through their four group homes, a day program, and a SARCAN recycling program.
