Province Supports Phase One of New Habitat for Humanity Multi-Family Housing Project in Regina
Released on June 8, 2015
The Government of Saskatchewan is partnering with Habitat for Humanity Regina (Habitat) to build phase one of a new multi-family condominium project in Regina. The project will be home to 62 local families, giving them the opportunity to improve their quality of life through homeownership. A groundbreaking ceremony was held today for the first 10 units to be constructed at 1033 Edgar Street, the former Haultain School site in Regina’s Eastview neighbourhood.
The 10 homes will receive $650,000 in funding support from the provincial government, through Saskatchewan Housing Corporation and are eligible for an additional $150,000 from the City of Regina.
“Our government is committed to creating affordable housing for those who need it most,” Regina Douglas Park MLA Russ Marchuk said on behalf of Social Services Minister and Minister responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation Donna Harpauer. “Helping families become homeowners is not only an invaluable investment, it’s also an opportunity to foster hope, empowerment and pride in ownership. We are pleased that Habitat initiatives like this one will continue to keep Saskatchewan strong and moving forward.”
“Regina continues to have a critical need for housing targeted at those most in need,” Regina Mayor Michael Fougere said. “Habitat for Humanity has a long history of helping transform our city in a fundamental way by making homeownership a reality for people who might not get that chance. The scope of this project, having five dozen Habitat homes, will be an incredibly positive addition to Regina.”
“Haultian Crossing will be built with generous hearts, hard work and many partnerships so 62 families can move into homeownership,” Habitat for Humanity Regina CEO Kelly Holmes-Binns said. “We are thrilled to build Saskatchewan’s largest Habitat for Humanity development right here in Regina. The support we have received is humbling. In partnership with the community, corporate sponsors, the City of Regina and the provincial government, we are building homes and hope together.”
The Haultain Crossing project will consist of two townhouse-style buildings, each housing five three-bedroom units. Together, the main and upper floors total 1,174 square feet (109 square metres). This total does not include the unfinished basement.
Since March 2009, the province’s overall commitment to Habitat totals $7.85 million and includes the January 2013 approval of $600,000 from the province’s Summit Action Fund. This funding supports builds in 12 communities across the province including Duck Lake, Fort Qu’Appelle, Humboldt, Lloydminster, Melfort, Moose Jaw, Nipawin, Prince Albert, Regina, Saskatoon, Weyburn and Yorkton.
The province now provides $65,000 per home in funding for homes starting construction. This is up from the $50,000 per home which was provided prior to March 2014.
Habitat’s innovative delivery model provides opportunities for families to stabilize their housing, and to achieve their homeownership goals. Each partner family selected by Habitat contributes 500 partnering hours in building their home, or other Habitat homes.
