Social Services Minister Donna Harpauer has proclaimed the week of June 1-7, as Deafblind Awareness Week in Saskatchewan.“Our government thanks the Saskatchewan chapter of the Canadian Deaf Blind Association (CDBA) for the valuable services and advocacy they provide to those who are deafblind,” Harpauer said. “People who are deafblind have a unique disability and our government recognizes the CDBA’s continued work raising awareness of disability issues impacting their members.”
“Helen Keller was deafblind and did some amazing things, despite her disability,” CDBA Saskatchewan Chapter Executive Director Dana Heinrichs said. “Helen was able to do these things because her unique needs were met through individualized programming. Our organization’s mission is to build on this by advocating for optimal independence and quality of life that ensures dignity and respect for all who experience deafblindness.”
The province’s 2015–16 Budget provides more than $23 million to support the inclusion of people with disabilities in the social and economic life of the province.
“Our government has committed to make Saskatchewan the best place to live in Canada for people with disabilities,” Harpauer said. “The CDBA’s leadership and expertise in accommodating these impacts of disability are making a significant difference to their members. Thanks to their great work, they are helping us make our commitment a reality.”
A Citizen Consultation Team was appointed to develop a comprehensive Disability Strategy. Community inclusion was one of the areas of focus the team prioritized as part of the development of the Strategy, expected to be released at the end of June.
