The Ministry of Education has accepted a new school site for northwest Regina following a vote by City Council Monday night.
The city informed the ministry that the original Skywood site would not be ready for construction as agreed upon under the Contribution Agreement between the City of Regina and the province. The City has recommended Rosewood Park in Coopertown as the alternate location for the new joint-use school in Regina’s growing northwest area.
“Our government recognizes the importance of building these two elementary schools in northwest Regina and this decision ensures that the community receives the innovative, state-of-the-art building that will put students first,” Education Minister Don Morgan said.
The ministry’s key partners, Regina Public and Catholic school divisions, are supportive of this new site.
“We support the announcement of a new location for our new joint school in Rosewood Park,” Regina Public Schools Board Chair Katherine Gagne said. “Regina Public Schools looks forward to working with our partners to open a new public school in 2017 to further serve the education needs of families in northwest Regina.”
“Our Division is confident that this decision has been made with the best interests for our students and families in the northwest part of Regina,” Regina Catholic School Division Board Chair Rob Bresciani said. “Our school division also looks forward to continuing to work with our educational partners to realize the opening of St. Nicholas School in northwest Regina in September 2017.”
The joint-use school in Rosewood Park in Coopertown is part of the province’s largest ever undertaking of new school construction that will deliver 18 new elementary schools on nine sites by September 2017. The Regina schools will be built in the neighbourhoods of Harbour Landing, Greens on Gardiner and Rosewood Park in Coopertown.
Each site will consist of a public and a Catholic school that together will accommodate more than 3,000 students in Regina and 11,000 students province wide from pre-kindergarten to grade 8 at full design capacity. Each site will also contain a 90-space child care centre, creating 810 new spaces overall, as well as community space.
Since 2007, the Government of Saskatchewan has committed approximately $948 million toward 65 major school capital projects and numerous smaller projects such as portable classrooms and preventative maintenance and renewal.
