In an effort to support children in Saskatoon’s wildfire evacuation centres, the Ministry of Education launched a pop-up camp for kids aged three to ten yesterday which will continue as needed until the evacuees return home.
“We want to do everything we can to make sure our evacuees feel supported,” Education Minister Don Morgan said. “We are pleased to be able to offer this pop-up camp as an activity for children who have been displaced by the wildfires.”
A need for fun and interesting activities was identified for children at the evacuation centre in Saskatoon. The pop-up camp included several portable play and learn stations that had kids splashing water while reading a book about frogs, digging in sand with toy tractors while reading about construction, and creating art at several art stations.
The Ministry of Education is working with the Ministry of Social Services to look at expanding play-based pop-up camps for children in other evacuation centres. The Ministry is also working with the Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation in order to secure teacher volunteers to provide interaction with children and their families.
