Province Celebrates Approved Private Service Home Week in Saskatchewan

Released on February 13, 2015

Social Services Minister Donna Harpauer, along with Health Minister Dustin Duncan, have proclaimed February 15-21 as Approved Private Service Home (APSH) Week in Saskatchewan.  The week recognizes the family-based model APSH homes provide for individuals with cognitive, mental health and physical disabilities.

“Setting the dates for Approved Private Service Home Week around Family Day (February 16) reinforces that home providers and their family members care for their residents, enabling them to reside in family settings in the community as long as they are able,” Harpauer said.

There are roughly 400 Community Living Service Delivery Approved Private Service Homes and Mental Health Approved Homes throughout Saskatchewan.  These homes make it possible for residents to enjoy living in a home-based setting, and provide individuals a chance to develop social, recreational and living skills.

“The support these family modelled homes provide to individuals with cognitive, mental, and physical disabilities is crucial in meeting the needs of our citizens,” Duncan said.

“Including all of the residents of our province as valuable, contributing citizens builds healthier, stronger communities for all,” Saskatchewan Approved Private Homes Inc. (SAPH) Executive Director Iris Miller-Dennis said.  “ SAPH Inc. thanks all of our providers and their families, neighbours, Government and our community partners for working together to provide high quality, affordable supported accommodations to Saskatchewan’s most vulnerable citizens.”

SAPH is a non-profit organization that provides information and support to both Community Living Service Delivery and Mental Health and Addictions approved homes in Saskatchewan.  SAPH is the representative of approved homes across the province and provides information, education and support for caregivers.

More information about SAPH can be found on their website at www.saph.ca.
