Spend Family Week at the Royal Saskatchewan Museum

Released on February 13, 2015

Looking for a place to spend Family Day?  The Royal Saskatchewan Museum (RSM) might be your answer.  The RSM has educational activities and drop-in programs planned throughout the week.

“Family Day is a wonderful opportunity for Saskatchewanians—both newcomers and long-time residents—to learn about our province’s past at the RSM,” Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Mark Docherty said.  “The engaging, hands-on programs delivered at the RSM help enhance quality of life for residents and visitors alike.”

During Winter Tales, a storyteller armed with props and puppets will share a variety of stories including the story of how the rabbit got his white fur and how the turtle got his shell.  Stories last about 30 minutes and include a hands-on segment where children and adults will be able to handle real museum specimens.  Winter Tales takes place Monday, February 16 at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, February 17 at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., and Wednesday, February 18 at 10:30 a.m.  This program is aimed at families with children aged three and older.

Family drop-in programs will give participants the opportunity to play a survivor game, paint their own pictograph and explore the climate and environment of dinosaurs through rock samples.  These programs feature authentic museum artifacts, cater to families with children aged five and older, and last about 40 minutes.

The schedule for family week is:
  • Monday, February 16, 1:30 p.m.: Mammoths: Elephants of the Prairie?
  • Wednesday, February 18, 2 p.m.: Survivor: The Extinction Game
  • Thursday, February 19, 2 p.m.: Pictographs, Petroglyphs and Painting
  • Friday, February 20, 2 p.m.: Reading Rocks and Fossils: Stories from the Earth.
“The RSM is proud to offer a variety of family week programming targeted at families,” RSM Director Harold Bryant said.  “Whenever school is out, attendance tends to increase and we fully expect this week to be a busy one.”

Families with children aged two to four can explore the RSM on their own and search for the “Star of the Week” in the galleries. Participants borrow a pair of binoculars and search the museum for a gold star.  Those who find the star will receive a prize featuring the animal next to the star.

Guests are also encouraged to visit the RSM’s latest exhibit, “A Roar of Wings,” which examines the disappearance of the passenger pigeon and a variety of other species including the Dodo, the Great Auk and the Tylosaur, an ancient marine reptile that once lived in Saskatchewan.  This exhibit is open until May.

The Paleo Pit, a self-use children’s playroom, is open daily from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.

The RSM, located at 2445 Albert Street in Regina, is open daily from 9:30 a.m. until 5 p.m.  For more information, visit www.royalsaskmuseum.ca or call 306-787-2815.  The RSM is also on Facebook at facebook.com/Royal.Saskatchewan.Museum and Twitter @royalsaskmuseum.
