Weyburn Police Service Receives $220,000 for Targeted Police Initiatives

The Government of Saskatchewan is taking action to ensure the safety of Weyburn communities and families through the Municipal Police Grants.  This provincial contribution of $220,000 will fund two Weyburn Police Service positions in 2015-16.

“The Government of Saskatchewan takes community and public safety very seriously,” Health Minister and Weyburn-Big Muddy MLA Dustin Duncan said on behalf of Corrections and Policing Minister Christine Tell.  “The positions that are funded through the Municipal Police Grants help to ensure that the residents of Weyburn feel safe and secure in their community.”

Municipal Police Grant funding supports the Serious Crime Unit and the Combined Traffic Safety Services Saskatchewan Division, a combined initiative between Estevan, Weyburn, and the RCMP that improves safety on highways in southeast Saskatchewan through increased awareness and enforcement.

“We are appreciative of the province’s ongoing commitment to policing in our municipality,” Weyburn Mayor Debra Button said.  “This funding enables us to better secure the safety of our community.”

"We appreciate the province's commitment through the Municipal Police Grants,” Weyburn Police Service Chief of Police Marlo Pritchard said.  "These annual funds provide the capacity to further develop skills, and allow for increased efforts as we focus on areas of risk within our community.”

The provincial government provides funding annually to urban police services across the province to support 125 municipal police positions and policing initiatives.  This grant fulfills the government’s commitment for 120 new police officers and is part of the ministry’s ongoing commitment to supporting policing services within the province’s municipalities.
