The Government of Saskatchewan is taking action to ensure the safety of Estevan communities and families through the Municipal Police Grants. This provincial contribution of $330,000 will fund three Estevan Police Service positions in 2015-16.“Community safety is a top priority for our government,” Estevan MLA Doreen Eagles said on behalf of Corrections and Policing Minister Christine Tell. “Continued support for targeted policing initiatives in Estevan is an essential tool for community and public safety.”
The programs supported through the Municipal Police Grants work to improve community safety through the Enhanced Community Policing and Serious Crime units.
Another important program is the Combined Traffic Services Saskatchewan division. The traffic unit is a combined unit between Estevan, Weyburn, and the RCMP and covers southeast Saskatchewan. The unit works to improve safety on the highways through increased awareness and enforcement of traffic regulations.
“We are appreciative of the continued funding commitment from the province,” Estevan Mayor Roy Ludwig said. “This support enables us to do a much better job of policing in our community.”
“We are grateful for the province’s ongoing commitment to policing through the Municipal Police Grants,” Estevan Police Service Chief Paul Ladoucer said. “These funds provide us with the capacity to enhance our ability to focus on areas of significant risk to our community.”
The provincial government provides funding annually to urban police services across the province to support 125 municipal police positions and policing initiatives. This grant fulfills the government’s commitment for 120 new police officers and is part of the ministry’s ongoing commitment to supporting policing services within the province’s municipalities.
