Released on December 9, 2015
On December 9, 2015, Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan Inc. (Potash Corp) of Saskatoon received a fine of $280,000 for a violation of occupational health and safety legislation in a Saskatoon Provincial Court.
Potash Corp pleaded guilty to contravening section 34 of The Mines Regulations, 2003 for failing to take effective steps to control the movement of strata in all underground excavations to protect the health and safety of workers.
Charges were laid after a workplace fatality on February 17, 2014. A worker in the Cory Mine was killed when he was struck on the head by falling earth.
While everyone in the workplace is responsible for workplace safety, employers carry the greatest responsibility because of their authority and control over the place of employment.
