Saskatchewan Marks National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women

In Canada, December 6 has been designated as the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women to commemorate the deaths of 14 female engineering students killed at Montreal’s l'École Polytechnique in 1989.  This year marks the 26th anniversary of this tragic event.

“Remembering this tragic event has become the basis of recognizing and supporting action against widespread violence committed against women and girls across the nation and beyond its borders,” Social Services Minister and Minister responsible for the Status of Women Donna Harpauer said.  “Gender violence is an issue that impacts everyone.  This day is an opportunity to reflect on and speak out against gender violence, and on how we can all help make our world a safe and equal place for all women and girls.”

“By recognizing women and girls who have experienced violence, we give them a voice,” Justice Minister and Attorney General Gordon Wyant said.  “From individuals, to community, to government, it is everyone’s responsibility to speak out against these crimes and take every opportunity to prevent them.”

The Government of Saskatchewan is committed to finding realistic and effective solutions to reduce interpersonal violence and abuse, eliminate violence against women and girls, and build upon existing work occurring between all levels of government and community partnerships:
  • During 2015-16, approximately $30 million is being provided to 83 agencies by the Ministry of Social Services to deliver programs and services that support vulnerable women at risk of violence and abuse.
  • During 2015-16, $11 million will be provided by the Ministry of Justice to develop and operate 43 services delivered by 33 community-based organizations in 17 communities across Saskatchewan.
This includes residential services and direct support for those who are experiencing, or are at risk of harm or injury related to, interpersonal violence and abuse.  It also includes the continued development of new transition house services in Melfort.

Harpauer distributed white ribbons to Cabinet colleagues and all MLAs earlier this week to commemorate this important date.  The white ribbons symbolize the wearer’s commitment to ending violence against women and girls.
