More individuals with intellectual disabilities in Weyburn and area, will now benefit from expanded day programming to support their personal growth and development. Health Minister and Weyburn – Big Muddy MLA Dustin Duncan, on behalf of Social Services Minister Donna Harpauer, was joined by Weyburn Mayor Debra Button and other dignitaries today to celebrate the grand opening of the Kinsmen Foundation Community Centre, located at 1800 Ebel Road.
“Today marks an exciting day for individuals with intellectual disabilities and the Weyburn community,” Duncan said. “Our government appreciates the work the Weyburn Wor-Kin Shop Corp. will be doing in their new community centre to allow these individuals to grow and live the life they choose.”
Government provided a total of $1 million in capital funding toward the project. Weyburn Wor-Kin Shop Corp. (WWS) raised a total of $500,000 and the Kinsmen Foundation contributed a total of $200,000 toward the completion of the project.
“Today has been many years in the making, with a lot of support and encouragement from the entire community,” Weyburn Wor-Kin Shop Executive Director Andria Brady said. “The enhanced programs and services we will be able to provide to current and future clients will be so beneficial to their continued successes and personal growth.”
“This investment has given the Kinsmen Foundation the ability to continue our work to improve peoples’ quality of life and enhance their daily living activities,” Kinsmen Foundation Board Chair Leanne Wildeman said. “This new facility will help those in Weyburn achieve that, and we thank the Government of Saskatchewan for making that dream come true. Congratulations!”
WWS currently supports approximately 36 individuals in their day program.
This new building will allow for expanded programming, to serve more individuals in the future. Special features of this new facility include an accessible shower, a room that provides a soothing and stimulating environment, and several training rooms aimed at teaching new skills, abilities and enhancing participants’ quality of life.
WWS has been supporting individuals with intellectual disabilities since 1971. The organization built a new Vocational Training Centre that officially opened its doors on October 14, 2014. The Centre houses their woodworking division, paper recycling, and confidential shredding programs.
WWS later held a grand opening ceremony for its new SARCAN Recycling Depot on November 21, 2014.
Both the SARCAN Recycling Depot and Vocational Training Centre were solely funded by WWS. Both facilities are located directly beside the new day program facility.
