A Habitat for Humanity (Habitat) partner family achieved their dream of homeownership after receiving keys to their new home at a presentation held in Nipawin today. The province, through Saskatchewan Housing Corporation (SHC), contributed $50,000 in funding toward the home, located at 302 - 8th Avenue West. In addition, funding was announced for another Habitat project under construction at 106 - 5th Street North. The province is contributing $65,000 in funding support to make this home a reality.“These homes truly represent the spirit of co-operation that exists in this great province and our collective goal to keep Saskatchewan strong,” Carrot River Valley MLA Fred Bradshaw said on behalf of Social Services Minister and Minister responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation Donna Harpauer. “Our government is proud to assist Habitat for Humanity’s work and, most importantly, support Saskatchewan families in greatest housing need.”
“Two Nipawin families have now moved into their new homes, with a third home currently in progress,” Habitat for Humanity Prince Albert Executive Director Jan Adamson said. “I would say our mission is well under way – to mobilize volunteers and community partners in building affordable housing and promoting homeownership as a means to break the cycle of poverty. I would also like to take this opportunity to acknowledge Morris Sawchuk, with whom I have apprenticed during the past few months, for dedicating more than 10 years of influence to the Prince Albert Habitat for Humanity Affiliate. By reaching out to our neighboring communities, Morris established the foundation for our Nipawin chapter, which was created to give more families in Saskatchewan a hand up – not a hand out.”
The Habitat home at 302 - 8th Avenue West is a three-bedroom bungalow approximately 1,000 square feet, or 93 square metres across the main floor, and has a partially finished basement. The second home, located at 106 - 5th Street North, will consist of a four-bedroom bungalow approximately 1,000 square feet or 93 square metres across the main floor. The basement will also be partially finished.
Since March 2009, the province’s overall commitment to Habitat totals $7.85 million.
This funding supports builds in 13 communities across the province including Duck Lake, Fort Qu’Appelle, Humboldt, Lloydminster, Melfort, Moose Jaw, Nipawin, North Battleford, Prince Albert, Regina, Saskatoon, Weyburn and Yorkton.
The province now provides $65,000 per home in funding for homes starting construction. This is up from the $50,000 per home which was provided prior to March 2014. Habitat’s innovative delivery model provides opportunities for families to stabilize their housing, and to achieve their homeownership goals. Each partner family selected by Habitat contributes 500 partnering hours in building their home, or other Habitat homes.
Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit organization working toward a world where everyone has a safe and decent place to live. The organization mobilizes volunteers and partners to build homes that provide families of low-income with access to affordable homeownership.
