Province Contracts Provision of Food Services in Eight Correctional Facilities

Released on August 5, 2015

The Ministry of Justice has signed a five-year agreement with Compass Group Canada to provide food services in eight of the province’s correctional facilities.  This will allow the ministry to focus on community safety, programming, supervision and rehabilitation while providing efficient and consistent service in the province’s correctional facilities.

“This decision will allow us to reinvest in programming and providing the best possible service to our offender population,” Corrections and Policing Minister Christine Tell said.  “Contracting with Compass Group will bring efficiency and consistency to food service delivery in our correctional facilities while saving valuable taxpayers dollars.”

Contracting with Compass Group will provide the following benefits:
  • Standardized menu, meal production, and consistent nutritional value that exceed the standards of Health Canada’s Food Guide;
  • Efficiencies in the delivery, procurement, and management of food services;
  • A savings of nearly $12 million over the term of the contract;
  • Cost stability over the life of the contract through an all-inclusive guaranteed price per meal for each of the eight correctional centres; and
  • Continued food service employment skills training for offenders.
The ministry is focused on reducing demand on the correctional system while providing high quality service to the offender population.

Compass Group has more than 35 years of experience in Saskatchewan.  They also have significant experience Alberta, Ontario and British Columbia providing food services in correctional facilities.

All existing food services staff will be offered the opportunity to retrain as Correctional Workers, or provided other supports through their collective bargaining agreement.
