Laying the Groundwork for a Healthier, Safer Saskatchewan

Released on April 27, 2015

Heavy equipment will be arriving at the site boundary of the Saskatchewan Hospital in North Battleford this week.  The equipment is being used to lay the groundwork needed before construction of the new Saskatchewan Hospital North Battleford Integrated Correctional Facility can take place.

Pre-construction activities have kicked off, and include bringing utilities to the site, including two power lines, a new gas line, two telecom lines, water lines, a sewer line and relocation of a telecom line.

The activities also include bringing access to the site with the addition of a temporary construction road.  The new road will provide access to the facility during construction when the existing access will be blocked off.

The scheduled date of completion for the pre-construction work is July 1, 2015.
“The Ministry of Central Services is pleased to add this groundbreaking and environmentally sustainable new facility to our diverse portfolio of buildings that we own and manage,” Central Services Minister Jennifer Campeau said.

The new and expanded complex will be built to a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver certification standard.  LEED is a rating system that is recognized as the international mark of excellence for green buildings in 150 countries.

Improving mental health services is a priority for government.

“The new Saskatchewan Hospital North Battleford will better meet the needs of patients who require in-patient rehabilitation, ensuring they receive the care and support they need in a modern environment,” Health Minister Dustin Duncan said.  “This new hospital supports our government’s commitment to addressing the recommendations in the Mental Health and Addictions Action Plan, which encourages sector partners to work together to improve mental health services across the province.”

The new integrated facility includes a 96-room correctional facility, which will be designed to provide support for male and female offenders living with mental health issues.

“We are pleased to see this important project moving along,” Corrections and Policing Minister Christine Tell said.  “These partnerships are incredibly important as we work together to align mental health and correctional services in our province.”

With the groundwork in place for construction of the new Saskatchewan Hospital North Battleford Integrated Correctional Facility, the Government of Saskatchewan can lay the building blocks needed for a healthier and safer Saskatchewan.
