Province Supports Vulnerable Individuals and Families in Regina and Area

Released on April 17, 2015

At an event in Regina today, the Government of Saskatchewan reaffirmed its commitment to community-based organizations (CBOs) in Regina and area.

The event was held at the Regina office of the Canadian Red Cross, an organization that is receiving $112,000 in the province’s 2015-16 budget to support the training of volunteers for help during disasters.

“Organizations such as the Canadian Red Cross are the heart and soul of communities across the province,” Regina Walsh Acres MLA Warren Steinley said on behalf of Social Services Minister Donna Harpauer.  “We respect and value the vast network of CBOs that are providing various programs and services each and every day to Saskatchewan.  We are proud to work together with these organizations to help keep Saskatchewan strong.”

“The Red Cross is happy to work in partnership with the Government of Saskatchewan to help families affected by disasters,” Red Cross in Saskatchewan Provincial Director Cindy Fuchs said.  “This funding is integral in helping the Red Cross be ready to respond immediately whenever and wherever disasters occur.”

Other funding highlights for Regina and area CBOs in 2015-16 include:
  • Young Women’s Christian Association of Regina (YWCA) – $932,000 (*$3.6 million);
  • AFS Aboriginal Family Service Centre Inc. - $401,000 provided through the Province’s Cognitive Disability Strategy. (*$1.4 million);
  • Ranch Ehrlo Society Pilot Butte - $264,000 provided through the Province’s Cognitive Disability Strategy. (*$4.3 million);
  • The Canadian National Institute for the Blind – $353,000;
  • Saskatchewan Approved Private Homes Inc. – $203,000;
  • Saskatchewan Youth in Care and Custody Network – $162,000;
  • Phoenix Residential Society – $132,000;
  • Saskatchewan Voice of People with Disabilities Inc. – $77,000; and
  • Catholic Family Services Society – $72,000 (*$1.2 million).
*The amounts indicated above are, in some cases, part of a larger contract commitment the Government of Saskatchewan has with the CBO.

The Ministry of Social Services provides funding to and works collaboratively with more than 200 CBOs across Saskatchewan and has more than 700 CBO contract agreements.

Allocations to these CBOs are reflected in the total funding to Saskatchewan CBOs, announced as part of the 2015-16 provincial budget.  An additional $2.3 million in funding for 2015-16 brings the overall general increases provided to CBOs for salary and operating costs to almost $50 million since 2007.

Following input received from community organizations at the 2008 CBO summits, many of the province's human-services CBOs now operate with the security of multi-year funding agreements.
