The Government of Saskatchewan’s growing portfolio of environmentally friendly buildings and building operations has received more national recognition. The Meadow Lake Courthouse has achieved silver certification under the Canada Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system.
“I’m pleased to see that our government’s efforts at reducing its environmental footprint are being recognized by the leaders in environmental building construction, design and maintenance,” Central Services Minister Jennifer Campeau said. “Whether it’s new construction or renovations to existing structures, our goal is to integrate environmental sustainability into all of our projects.”
The LEED system evaluates buildings for environmental design and sustainability in five areas: sustainable sites, water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, materials and resources, and indoor environmental quality. Completed in 2010, the Meadow Lake Courthouse received silver certification for a variety of environmental benefits, including:
- 42 per cent less water consumption than a comparable building;
- 42 per cent less energy consumption than a comparable building;
- 50 per cent less water is required for landscape purposes;
- 15 per cent of materials used during construction were from recycled products; and
- 75 per cent of waste materials during construction were recycled.
“The courthouse was a welcome addition to the Meadow Lake community, and having one that reduces water and energy consumption makes it that much better,” Minister responsible for Immigration, Jobs, Skills and Training and Meadow Lake MLA Jeremy Harrison said. “I commend the contractors, the ministry staff and all those involved, in making this certification possible.”
The government now has seven buildings certified or pending certification under the LEED program.
Twenty-seven government buildings are certified or pending certification under the BOMA BESt (Building Owners and Managers Association of Canada – Building Environmental Standards) certification program, which recognizes buildings that are maintained and operated in a green manner. In addition, one facility has received designation under the Green Globes environmental design program.
