Major Renovation Completed for Luther College High School

Released on September 9, 2014

Today Education Minister Don Morgan joined students, staff, parents, alumni, donors and university officials to celebrate the completion of a major addition and renovation of Luther College High School.  The $17.3 million project was completed in August 2014 after two years of construction.  The government contributed $857,000 to the project.

“Luther College High School has been delivering quality education for more than 100 years in Saskatchewan and our government is committed to ensure students can experience Luther’s tradition of excellence for 100 more,” Morgan said.  “This project is an excellent example of infrastructure meeting the changing needs of our students now and into the future.”

The renovation includes a new gymnasium, as well as fitness, training and locker facilities, a new student commons and study area, and mechanical and lighting upgrades for the existing gymnasium.  In addition, the fine arts department now includes three new classrooms to support the school’s renowned music, drama and film arts programs, as well as a completely rebuilt stage with an underground green room in the current gymnasium.

“Luther College began as the result of the vision of a group of pioneers who wanted to ensure that their students had the very best educational experience and that vision continues today with the opening of these facilities designed to support the outstanding teaching and learning that is part of the College tradition,” Luther College President Dr. Bryan Hillis said.  “We thank all those who have contributed to this project with their gifts of money and time including former and current faculty and staff, students, the Government of Saskatchewan and, of course, our dedicated alumni.”

“The new facilities allow for designated areas of learning,” Luther College teacher Jon Graf said.  “We can have more individualized programs, focus on learning outcomes and create spaces that excite our students.”

“The new spaces will allow for greater opportunities for new ways of learning,” Grade 12 Students Representative Council President Nelson Musungu said.  “The student commons area will be wonderful for building community and school pride with more occasions for socializing between the grades.”

Since November 2007, the Government of Saskatchewan has committed approximately $700 million toward 47 major school capital projects and numerous smaller projects such as portable classrooms and preventative maintenance and renewal.
